What’s In The Basket?

If you are following ThePeakPosse on Twitter or Facebook, you’ve no doubt seen the phrase; What’s In The Basket? Well – what IS in the basket and what’s it all about. With is us today is ThePeakPosse administrator extraordinaire, Bonnie Terbush to tell us all about it.Hi Bonnie and welcome! When MyPeakChallenge was first announced and ThePeakPosse came together how did the basket start?Almost everyone in the group has been touched by cancer in some way, whether they’ve had it themselves or a family member or friend has had it. As a group, we wanted to raise additional funds for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research (currently Bloodwise) and explored various ways to do so. As soon as an Outlander Gift Basket was mentioned as a way to raise additional funds, the “what can I do?” and “what do you need?” responses immediately started flowing. The rest was history.

You’ve done baskets for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research (currently Bloodwise), World Child Cancer and Action for Children. Can you tell the readers a little about the success of each?

One of the many things that each member of ThePeakPosse has in common is the love of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series, now the Starz adaptation.  With the first fundraiser for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, a charity supported by Sam Heughan, came the group’s desire to raise funds for additional charities supported by actors of Outlander. The series, thus far, has been phenomenal and this is the group’s way to pay the actors back for portraying the beloved characters that we have grown to love – and to help some wonderful organizations.

The desire to raise funds for the actor supported organizations, the item donations for the Gift Baskets and the monetary donations from members and nonmembers has been extremely generous and overwhelming. Each basket consisted of 60 – 100 items and included items autographed by the actors of Outlander (photographs of the actors, Outlander scripts, books signed by Diana, T-shirt worn by Graham, Frisbee), whisky mixed by Graham, jewelry, knitted items, glassware, T-shirts, Outlandish Journey Tour in Scotland,  Novel Adventure Tour, etc.

ThePeakPosse has raised $25,588.05 for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research/Bloodwise,  $17,402.58 for World Child Cancer , a charity supported by Caitriona Balfe and $12,403.93 for Action for Children, a charity supported by Graham McTavish.  Currently, the Group is raising funds for Bloodwise.

So the new basket is for Bloodwise; what’s in it so far? Can you clue us in on upcoming additions?

Yes, the current Gift Basket is raising funds for Bloodwise. So far, the Gift Basket includes the following items: Luxury 2 Day Tour of Scotland with Outlandish Journeys; 2 copies of The Box magazine; Je Suis Bag; Outlander Mousepad; Dragonfly Amber Glass Wooden Trinket Box;Signed copy of Voyager; £25 Bear Strength Gift Voucher; Autographed photo of Duncan Lacroix; Standing Stone – 3D Brushed Pewter Lapel Pin; Autographed photo of Graham McTavish; Book of Poems by Robert Burns; Cooklander To The Stove Cookbook; James Fraser print signed by the artist; Autographed photo of Bill Paterson; Scottish Tea Collection; Delicate Hand Painted Dragonfly Amber Czech Glass Bookmark; Sing Me A Song Tote Bag; Claire’s ring in Sterling Silver; Bloodwise stationary set; Pop Vinyl Jamie; Autographed photo of Gary Lewis; Pop Vinyl Claire; Tea cup; Pop Vinyl Dougal; Paris make-up bag; Bloodwise Bear; Autographed photo of Grant O’Rourke; Pop Vinyl BJR; Outlandish Panels Scarf; Autographed photo of Sam Heughan; Thistle Pendant;  Ass Kisser Body Damage Cream; Gift Certificate for a Scottish Tam or Claire’s Capelet.

There are plenty more items to come. I don’t want to give anything away but the Basket may include a magazine that is no longer available for purchase, additional autographs and wearable items. New items are constantly being added. Everyone will have to stay tuned on Twitter to find out #WhatsInTheBasket.

When it comes to donating to charity, many people are suspect their donations never reach the organization. Set donor’s minds at ease; tell us about your Just Giving site, and how that directly links to Bloodwise.

I’ve worked in Banking for 19 years and I’ve seen everything. Almost every day, a new scam pops up. I understand that people are cautious who they give their hard earned money to and they should be. The funds that ThePeakPosse raise for the organizations are ALWAYS raised through Just Giving. Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity. It’s the most efficient way to donate – saving time and cutting costs for the charity. It is important that people understand that the funds they donate NEVER touch anyone’s hand other than the charity.  Before you donate, always verify that the site you’re donating to is raising funds for the intended charity. The charity, along with the organization’s Charity Registration Number, will be listed right on the front page of the site.

I have been amazed every day by the generosity of Outlander fans. The old adage, “There is no ‘I’ in TEAM” is definitely applicable as it has taken the generosity of many to make each fundraiser successful.  The Gift Basket Raffles could not have been successful without the donation of the items that go into the baskets. The items in each basket have been donated by Outlander actors; Outlander fans; creative individuals who knit or crochet scarves, gloves, capelets and blankets; individuals with Etsy stores; other groups that have made items to sell for fundraising and various businesses – Outlandish Journeys has donated a full day Outlander tour in Scotland for each basket (2 day tour in the current basket), Georgian Glassmakers, the company that made the glasses seen in the series donated a set of glasses,  Hamilton & Young in Edinburgh donated a sterling Outlander inspired ring, Novel Adventures donated a 3 day “Gathering on The Ridge” in NC, Bear Strength Apparel donated a voucher, Hillcrest House Bed and Breakfast donated a one night stay at their bed and breakfast in Scotland. Additionally, people can participate by spreading the word through a Retweet on Twitter (@ThePeakPosse, @BonnieTerbush) or by sharing a post through our Fundraising page on Facebook . It is so important to get the word out so we can raise as much funds as possible. Anyone can help! You don’t have to be a member of ThePeakPosse.

The Gift Basket Raffles could not have been successful without the monetary donations to the current charity. Any donation, no matter the amount, is greatly appreciated and will help the current charity reach their goals.

Not only are the donations on ThePeakPosse’s Just Giving sites secure and transparent, they are being generously matched by Macquarie.  Macquarie is the employer of Heather Lee Ying, member of ThePeakPosse.

The Macquarie Group Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Macquarie Group. It helps strengthen the communities Macquarie staff live and work in by facilitating staff volunteering and pro bono programs with community organizations around the world.  Macquarie employees and the Macquarie Group Foundation have also given generously, resulting in more than $A250 million donated to over 2,500 organizations globally over the past 30 years.

It is important that when a donation is made on our Just Giving site that the donation phrase includes the following statement in order for the match to occur: IN SUPPORT OF THE FUND RAISING EFFORTS, THEPEAKPOSSE/HEATHER L.Y“. Thank you so much Heather and Macquerie!!!

We ask all our blog guests the same final question; what motivates you, Bonnie?

Anyone who knows me knows that I get extremely emotional when I talk about the people that I love. As I sit here writing about ThePeakPosse and fundraising, tears are running down my face. In January, 2015, I created a Facebook Group, I did not create ThePeakPosse. Each and every member of the Group has had a hand in creating ThePeakPosse and making the Group what it is today. In the last fourteen months, I have made hundreds of new friends who share many commonalities. I have been fortunate to have had many opportunities and to meet many members of the Group. ThePeakPosse has changed my life and given me the encouragement, motivation, love and confidence to venture out of my comfort zone. On April 24, 2016, I will be running in the London Marathon for World Child Cancer. I will be running with two other members of ThePeakPosse.  To say that this is far beyond my comfort zone is not an exaggeration. I’ve received so much motivation and encouragement during the journey and Marathon Training, I have no doubt that I will finish the race.

The fundraising has opened my eyes to a new passion. I have learned so much about the organizations that we have raised funds for and I’ve communicated extensively with representatives of each organization. In the last year, cancer has touched my life. My family has been extremely fortunate, while many others have not. I see how my new friends and members of ThePeakPosse have been touched by cancer and it breaks my heart. Children are our future and it is very important to help them be all that they can be by providing them with safe, happy homes and providing them with the tools to achieve success. If I can do something, even in a small way, to help aid cancer research, provide a child with the chance of living through such a horrible disease or becoming all that they can be, I’m going to do what I can without hesitation.

Outlander, ThePeakPosse and fundraising have enriched my life more than words cans say.

I would like to thank everyone who has had a hand in raising funds for the Outlander actor’s charities; your generosity has been invaluable and the fundraisers could not have been successful without your help. Together, we can #MakeADifference.

Thank you, Bonnie, for all you do and for chatting with us today! Make sure to check out What’s In The Basket and support Bloodwise today!
